Pagan solidifies commitment to Gators

Perhaps the biggest news coming out of Florida's Friday Night Lights camp was the solidification of the commitment of four-star defensive end Jeoffrey Pagan (Asheville, NC), who was previously wavering with his decision to wear the Orange and Blue in 2011.

Pagan first committed to the Gators in April but, as soon as May, softened his commitment strength to around 75 percent. Just three weeks ago, he told the Asheville Citizen-Times that he was “about 50 percent on Florida,” saying he would probably not announce officially until his high school season began on Aug. 27.

Some even believed that Florida’s acquisition of five-star defensive end/linebacker Chris Martin via transfer from California would irk Pagan due to the added competition, even though Martin is expected to compete mostly at linebacker.

Instead, according to two recruiting services, Pagan solidified his commitment on Friday after his mom got a chance to visit, tour and approve of the University of Florida.

Countdown 2 NSD: July 16, 2010

Alabama commitment Danny Woodson opens up, considering Vols

4 star Mobile, AL wide receiver Danny Woodson committed to Alabama back in March but now considers himself a soft commitment. The Rivals 100 player told Bama Online that he is discouraged by Alabama's depth at WR and the amount of WR committed to the Tide in the 2011 class.

"I am still committed to Alabama, but it is a soft verbal. I am looking hard at Auburn and Tennessee and I will be at Auburn Saturday for a day for one of their camps," said Woodson. "I haven't really talked to Alabama since the last camp but I plan to soon. Part of the problem is I am looking at all of the receivers they have on campus now and they have three other guys besides me committed too. I just want to make sure I make the right decision."

It is being said that Alabama coaches told Woodson at their June camp that they have concerns with his weight and grade point average. UT signed 4 highly rated receivers in 2010 but are looking to take one highly rated wr in this class.

Uzomah closing in on decision

Sources are saying North Gwinnett quarterback C.J. Uzomah is nearing a decision and Auburn, LSU, and Tennessee appear to be a trio of schools who are in the thick of landing his commitment. Uzomah is visiting LSU this weekend and may make a stop in Auburn on his way home.

What is interesting is CJ told rivals.com back in May that UT and Auburn were recruiting him as a QB and that LSU is recruiting him as a jumbo athlete.

"For quarterback it's Tennessee, Auburn, Notre Dame but they haven't offered yet, then Clemson and South Carolina," he said. "For jumbo-athlete it's Maryland, South Florida and LSU, especially with what they do with Russell Shepard. Those schools say I can come in and play quarterback and if that doesn't work out they'll see where else I can help the team in another way."

"I want to go to a place that will give me the opportunity to play quarterback," the 6-foot-5, 242-pounder said. "I've been playing that position since I was six and think I can help the team out the best there. However I do feel if I'm completely in love with a certain school more than anywhere else I will go there no matter what. But right now I want to go to a place where they'll let me play quarterback."

With quarterbacks Justin Worley committed to UT and Kiehl Frazier committed to Auburn, the question is whether or not these schools would still give him the opportunity to play QB. At LSU, they need a QB for the 2011 class but have been recruiting Uzomah as an athlete.

CJ attends the same high school as 2010 UT signee Jawuan James. Look for Uzomah to make a decision in the next couple of weeks.

Chris Jones and Auburn split ways, UT still in top 3

Adamsville, AL defensive back Chris Jones was expected to make a commitment to Auburn this week but that no longer seems to be the case. It appears that a falling out has occurred between the 4 star athlete and the Tigers and that they will be parting ways with each other for good. Jones wouldn't elaborate on the reason why Auburn had slipped from the top spot, but did say that Auburn coaches weren't happy about the decision. Now it appears that Auburn will no longer be recruiting Jones.

This is good news for the Vols, who Jones says he is still very interested in. After receiving a UF offer in May, Jones said it was Auburn, Florida, and then UT in his top 3. However, Jones maintained the whole time he favored Auburn that a Bama offer would be a game-changer and would immediately put them in the top list of schools for his recruitment.

With that Bama offer finally coming in last month, Jones said "The Alabama offer is something to think about. My mom was pretty happy that I got it. I am going to take some officials in the fall and make my decision then more than likely."

I assume the Tide will be tough to beat out for the Alabama native. One thing going for the Vols is they signed Jones friend and teammate Raiques Crump in 2010.

4* D.E. Jeoffrey Pagan to visit Vols next week

UT has relied on the western part of North Carolina to fill its roster the last two decades. Names like Heath Shuler, Leonard Little, Carl Pickens, and Jonathan Crompton are a few who have starred up on the hill. The Vols are hoping to extend the trend in 2011 with Asheville, NC defensive end Jeoffrey Pagan, who will be attending the Vols football camp next week.

The Vols have a lot of ground to make up with the #25 player in the nation, who committed to Florida in April, but getting him on campus is definitely a start. Pagan's parents were not thrilled that their son committed to the Gators so soon and without thinking about his other options. Now Pagan is considered a soft commitment to the Gators at most, and saying that his decision will ultimately come down to distance from home.

"Distance is the most important thing to me," Pagan told Tigerillustrated.com in a recent interview at his school. "I love my family and want them to see me play in college. That's the most important thing to me."

That is good news for both Vol fans and Clemson fans, who's campuses are the closest to Asheville among the schools being considered by Pagan. Clemson is 1.5 hours and Knoxville is 2 hours from Asheville, while UGA, Georgia Tech, and UNC are all at least 3 hours away. Considering UT's success recruiting Asheville in the past, look for the Vols to make up a lot of ground with Pagan after camp next week.

Gabe Wright visiting 4 SEC schools

I told you earlier in the week that the Vols are in good shape with Georgia defensive tackle Gabe Wright. Wright will be burning up the road over the next two weeks. Wright is spending 3 nights in Athens at Dawg Nights this weekend. From there he will travel to Auburn on Monday, and more than likely make a stop in Tuscaloosa afterward. Next weekend Wright is camping at Tennessee. Wright will more than likely wind up at one of these 4 schools and this roadtrip will likely be his last chance to see each school before the start of school.

DB Justin Coleman down to Tennessee and Kentucky

Brunswick, GA cornerback Justin Coleman will be making his college decision on July 28th and is rumored to be down to UT and UK. The 3 star back has an impressive offer sheet consisting of UT, Kentucky, Auburn, WVU, Wisconsin, OK State, among others. Coleman would be a good pickup for the Vols, who have yet to sign a cornerback in 2011. Out of the Vols 3 db's signed in 2010, only Dontavius Sapp has been admitted to school and he is expected to play safety.
